The Maybeck Award
The Maybeck Award is an exceptional honor given to a small number of California architects. It is an honor bestowed by the California chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Award winners must show a lifetime of significant achievements, substantial contributions to the profession, and a body of work that is notable and influential. The Irving J. Gill Foundation submitted a comprehensive portfolio of Gill's work and achievements, illustrating his unique and substantial career.
Gill met and exceeded all the award criteria, and the judges unanimously voted for Gill to be thus honored.
The following video features a summary of Gill's architecture and comprises portions of the application submitted by the Irving J. Gill Foundation to the AIA CC. This video was first shown at Irving J. Gill: Transitioning to Modern, the Foundation's symposium and celebrations held on April 26, 2018, in San Diego. James B. Guthrie, AIA, president and founder of the Irving J. Gill Foundation, accepted the award in Irving J. Gill's honor at an AIA CC ceremony in Monterey, California, on October 13, 2017.
